Welcome to our Koresemi Panel that is ALL about the world of Japanese-to-English（日英） Media Translation! In this special online seminar, we’ll be talking about what it’s really like working as a professional J-E media translator, tips for passing the JVTA Trial, J-E translation media trends, and other special info that you can only learn from a project manager and J-E course graduates currently working in the J-E field.

This time, we’ll be breaking our panel down into two separate sessions: Part 1, which is a talk with two professional J-E translators/JVTA graduates that will share their personal experiences about what it’s like to work as a translator. For Part 2, we’ll be inviting one of our very own in-house project managers who specializes in J-E projects to talk about what the current industry trends are, what kind of projects are popular these days, what they look for in a translator, and more!

This will be a great opportunity to hear from BOTH sides – translator and project manager – about what it’s like to translate J-E media these days and what YOU need to know to have a successful career! Whether you are a current or past student of our J-E course, or have not studied J-E but are interested in learning more about it, we would love for you to join us!

Our panelists this time are Betsy Linehan-Skillings and Aya Nakamae, two professional J-E translators who have completed JVTA’s J-E course. The discussion will include what kind of projects they work on, how they manage their time, how they organize their work schedule, and other valuable info that will surely help you on your own journey to become a J-E visual media translator. Don’t miss it!

■Participation Requirements:

You can join the seminar if you are able to view videos stably, such as with a computer or tablet. We recommend the use of earphones/headphones to improve your listening experience. We will have a Q&A section, so if you have a mic, please have it ready.

We will also be offering an option to receive a recording for this seminar for anyone who cannot attend in real-time. If you’d like to receive the recording, please leave a message in the 備考欄 comment box in the signup form indicating so. We will send the recording within one week of the seminar.

【Panelists】

■Betsy Linehan-Skillings

Betsy works full-time as J-to-E video game localization professional based in Kansai. Upon completing the Professional Course at JVTA in 2022, she worked for a year as a freelance J-to-E game translator and editor before going in-house at Dragonbaby localization. Her primary focus is creatively translating character dialogue in story-rich games, including many wonderful indie games like In His Time and many more that have yet to be released, including a wonderful fantasy RPG that will be released for the Nintendo Switch later this year.

■Aya Nakamae

Aya is a freelance Japanese to English translator and editor based in Tokyo. She completed the Japanese-to-English Professional Course at JVTA in 2021, but has been working in translation in general for about 20 years. Her works include Wheels and Axle, Confetti, Black Familia – The Shindos’ Revenge, and Tokyo Swindlers.

Jessi Nuss (J-E Course Director and Instructor at JVTA)

Born in California in the US, Jessi oversees the content and management of JVTA’s Japanese-to-English Media Translation Course, and is also involved in teaching classes and seminars related to J-E media translation. A longtime Japanese pop culture enthusiast, she loves the challenge that J-E media translation presents, and sharing the fun of it with students at JVTA.

Our KORESEMI Panel the only extracurricular seminar that has been held every semester, without fail, since the establishment of Japan Visualmedia Translation Academy (JVTA) over twenty years ago. The progress of our students, our translators, and the panelists for this seminar is the progress of JVTA itself.

Today, freelancing is undergoing great change. We are in an age where the government has begun providing support and large corporations encourage side jobs. This applies to the visual media translation industry as well. Client companies are reviewing the laws and regulations of business, leading to a change in the way they evaluate and do business with translators. What challenges does this pose for professional translators, and how do they overcome them? KORESEMI is a unique opportunity to get a realistic perspective from actual translators, which can be hard to come by.
